Today I went to see Golan Levin talk at Duke as part of the Friday lunchtime series. I had heard the name before, but didn’t know much about his work. Not only was his talk amazingly relevant to the work that we’re doing in studio and seminar, but also really helped me to think about how to consider the point and point of view that I might be considering in any given project.
Levin makes the point that we can take seemingly ‘neutral’ data to create commentary. I think as a designer I am quick to have a point of view about something, and to want to communicate that point of view precisely. Everyone should “know” or “get” the point of what it is that I’m creating. I think I’m increasingly understanding the value and power in leaving this open to interpretation. Rather than making a ‘point,’ I think it’s equally, if not more, provocative to think about a particular topic within the context of interpretation.
check it out.
